Behind the lens of The Uncommon Angler
Austin Green Photography
The Uncommon Angler is the fly fishing photography and filmmaking project of Austin Green. Based in the Mid-Atlantic, Austin documents predator fishing adventures across Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Vermont — with a particular focus on pursuing Esox, musky, pike, and smallmouth bass.
His work has been featured in This Is Fly Magazine and Southern Culture On The Fly, and he is a member of the 3-TAND Pros+Bros Team. Austin's portfolio lives at austingreenphotography.com.
Fly Fishing Photography Tips
In February 2016, Austin published “10 Tips to Improve Your Fly Fishing Photography” via the Flymen Fishing Company Blog. The article covers practical advice for anglers looking to capture better images on the water — from working with natural light to composing action shots that tell a story.
Whether shooting from a drift boat or wading a backcountry stream, the emphasis is always on patience, preparation, and an eye for the decisive moment.
The photography behind The Uncommon Angler captures the raw intensity of predator fly fishing in a way that still images rarely convey. Each frame is composed with an eye for the dramatic tension between angler and fish, often shot from the water itself or from precarious positions along rocky riverbanks. The portfolio emphasizes the explosive strikes of musky and pike, the acrobatic leaps of smallmouth bass, and the quiet patience of casting in early morning light. Rather than simply documenting catches, the images tell a broader story of pursuit—the long hours on the water, the changing seasons across Mid-Atlantic rivers, and the intimate connection between the fly caster and the wild environment they navigate.
Fly fishing photography presents unique challenges that differ from conventional outdoor photography. Reflective water surfaces, low-light conditions at dawn and dusk when predator fish are most active, and the split-second timing of a strike all demand technical skill and patience. The photographer must anticipate the action before it happens, keeping the camera ready while also managing a fly rod or maneuvering a boat. This dual role—part angler, part filmmaker—defines the approach behind The Uncommon Angler. The resulting images carry an authenticity that comes from someone who understands the rhythm of the cast, the feel of the strip, and the electric moment when a big fish commits to the fly.
Beyond still photography, the project extends into filmmaking that brings fly fishing stories to life through motion and sound. Documenting predator species like musky and pike requires a different filmmaking approach than trout fishing—the pace is slower, the stakes feel higher, and the action, when it comes, is explosive and brief. These films often follow a single pursuit across an entire day on the water, capturing not just the catch but the atmosphere: the sound of line cutting through still water, the commentary between anglers, and the quiet satisfaction of a well-executed cast. The work has been recognized by publications that celebrate the artistic side of fly fishing culture.
Pursuing Esox
The Pursuing Esox documentary project brought Austin together with Rock On Charters and 3-TAND for filming on the water. The project was featured in This Is Fly Magazine in June 2015, and a custom logo was created by Jaybo Art for F3T to benefit CCA Maryland.
In September 2016, S.C.O.F. Issue No. 20 — Blood Oath — featured Pursuing Esox, further cementing the project's place in the predator fly fishing community.
